About Our Yarn, Roving, & Raw Fleeces

Our sheep are shorn twice each year— once in late spring just before heading out to pasture for the season, and again in autumn.  The spring fleeces come off partially felted and full of hay and dirt.  We select a few of these to pick clean and wash for use as rugs or seat coverings.  The autumn fleeces are cleaner and of much better quality and this wool is offered for sale as raw fleeces, roving and yarn.

Raw fleeces are available for a limited time every October following our autumn shearing.  Whatever we don’t sell as raw fleece is sent off to the fiber mill to be processed into roving and yarn.   We use a small-scale, solar-powered mill in Maine that uses eco-friendly/chemical-free practices every step of the way.  Our yarn is spun lopi-style in the traditional way that Icelanders have spun the wool of these sheep for centuries.  Lopi yarn is spun single ply with a low twist and is known for its warmth and durability- ideal for sweaters, hats, and mittens.  Our yarn and roving contain about 50% lambswool.

Our fiber is currently available in beautiful natural colors of white, cream, grey, brown, and black.  Many of the sheep have natural highlights or variation in their coats that makes for subtle heathering that adds lovely depth to our yarns.  We have been busy filling the gardens with dye plants over the past few years and have plans of offering botanically-dyed yarns for sale in the future.
