Yarn, Roving, & Raw Fleeces
Our sheep are shorn twice each year— once in late spring just before heading out to pasture for the season, and again in autumn. The spring fleeces come off partially felted and full of hay and dirt. We select a few of these to pick clean and wash for use as rugs or seat coverings. The autumn fleeces are squeaky clean and of much better quality; this wool is offered as raw fleece, roving, and yarn.
Raw fleece is available for a limited time in the weeks after shearing. Please contact us now if you would like to be added to the wait list! Whatever doesn’t sell as raw fleece goes on to the mill to be processed into roving and yarn. We use a small-scale, solar-powered mill in Maine that uses eco-friendly/chemical-free practices. Our yarn is spun lopi-style in the traditional way that Icelanders have spun the wool of these sheep for centuries. Lopi yarn is spun single ply with a low twist and is known for its warmth and durability. Our yarn and roving contain about 50% lambswool for a softer and more luxurious feel.
Currently our fiber is available in beautiful natural colors of white, cream, grey, brown, and black. Many of the sheep have natural highlights or variation in their coats that makes for subtle heathering that adds lovely depth to the yarn. We have been busy filling the gardens with dye plants over the past few years and have dreams of offering botanically-dyed yarns in the not-too-distant future.
Our first batch of yarn is expected March 2026.
